Performance
The 2023 Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R feature similar looks, but underneath they behave quite differently, so we'll separate their performance characteristics to help you find the model that best fits your preferences.
Let's start with the GTI, where you'll find a lot of familiarity, but some enhancements that improve your driving experience even further. Both a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and six-speed manual gearbox are available, so you'll still have the standard choice of pure speed versus driving engagement when choosing your MK8 model. The 2.0-liter turbocharged EA888 engine gets a power boost over previous models, churning out 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, both figures that are nearly 20 more than their predecessor. With the dual-clutch automatic that means zero-to-60 mph in just about 6.5 seconds, while the six-speed stick will get you there in roughly 6.7 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Golf R really stretches its legs with a 2.0-liter turbo that is tuned to deliver 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The biggest performance gain you'll get with this model though, is the reengineered 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Not only will you get the added confidence to handle snowy roads with ease, but new drive modes give you some extra ways to have fun as well. There's even a Drift Mode for when you want to unleash your inner Tanner Foust, and it's all tied together with the quick-shifting seven-speed DSG transmission that keeps you in the powerband and pushing forward. From a launch, you'll go from standing still to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds thanks to the renewed all-wheel drive system. Torque-vectoring technology helps improve cornering capability as well, giving the new Golf R a nimble feel that rivals the GTI despite the added weight of the all-wheel drive system.

Technology
Both the 2023 Golf GTI and Golf R are bringing a host of new technology to the table, including a new digital instrument cluster that puts more information at your fingertips. Not only can you cycle through multiple panes to find your performance monitor, trip information, and vehicle data, but you can open a full-screen map view to make navigation easier than ever. And that built-in navigation comes with live traffic updates to help you find faster routes to your destination, even as traffic conditions change ahead of you.
Safety
With the Volkswagen Front Assist system, you'll enjoy standard safety features including:
- Forward collision warning with pedestrian detection
- automatic emergency braking
- Adaptive cruise control
- Lane keep assist
These features can be adjusted to your preferences and will give you an added layer of confidence to tackle heavy traffic and city streets with ease.
